That's quite a title and quite a bold statement.

But the title isn't click bate, I genuinely believe this is one of the three key foundation exercises everyone should be able to do, (along with being able to rotate your pelvis and the Plank).

Why is this Exercise so Important?

Two reasons:

  1. Those Who Sit Behind a Computer for a Living

Those of us who sit slumped behind a computer for most of our working day typically round our upper back, jut our chins forwards, rotate our arms downwards and protract our shoulders forwards. Our bodies tighten into this position so that when we stand up we still adopt these features. Just look at someone in profile and you can pretty much tell from their posture if they have a seated job or not.

If someone can tell your job from your posture, that's really not a good sign

As a result, these sort of people often present with tight neck and shoulders, burning sensations between their shoulder blades and intermittent pain in the low back. They feel tight or stiff but spend 90% of their working lives exasperating these symptoms with their 'work' posture.

2. This Exercise Shapes 90% of Gym Exercises

If you look closely you will see that most exercises you see in the gym adopt similar shapes or 'character' traits.

A Squat, a Deadlift, a Plank, a 1 Arm Row, a Woodchop, a Press Up all have similar spinal shapes and are similar in regards to shoulder stability.

If you can create the 'base shape' that links all these exercises, performing the above movements becomes a million times easier and simplifies training hugely. You can then increase reps or sets, or your training weight to give you the desired outcome you want from your weight lifting.

But before you start loading your body, ensure you can do the 'base shape' first.

This exercise IS the base shape so you should be able to do this movement easily and effectively.
